President Nguyễn Minh Triết receives Dr. Francis Gurry,WIPO Director General
President Triet received Dr. Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at the premise of Presidential Palace on 20 January.
 
The President confirmed Vietnam’s commitment to intellectual property (IP) protection, saying the country has issued IP-related legal documents and established IP offices. However, he said that since the legal system was not fully completed, the IP working staff has been not well trained leading to difficulties in enforcement of IP rights. Therefore, Vietnam still needs assistance from the WIPO to better this job. 
 
Director General  Gurry praised Vietnam for its efforts to implement international treaties on IP rights and said that Viet Nam is an exemplary model in protection of IP rights and in cooperation with WIPO. Dr. Francis Gurry stressed that Viet Nam’s determination and commitment will help to promote its image and products abroad. He added that WIPO is willing to provide more assistance to Viet Nam,with priority being given to training IP officials.

Permanent Deputy PM of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, H.E. Nguyễn Sinh Hùng received Dr. Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Ha Noi on 19 January 2010. During the meeting,Dr. Francis Gurry said Viet Nam had a right assessment of IP’s important role and achieved great achievements in IP protection. He also highly appreciated the cooperation between Viet Nam and WIPO,and emphasized that IP had made a significant contribution to the country’s socio-economic development over the past years.
KIPO’S OFFICIAL VISIT TO VIETNAM AND THE SIGNING CEREMONY OF THE MoU ON IP COOPERATION
A high ranking Delegation of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) headed by Mr. Jung-Sik KOH, KIPO’s Commissioner, paid an official visit to the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP) on 23 November 2009. The Director General of the NOIP, Mr. Tran Viet Hung, and Heads of NOIP Divisions received the Delegation and held a meeting where the two Offices exchanged information on their recent development of intellectual property system and international issues concerned by the Parties.
New NOIP’s Branch Office opened in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park
On November 6th 2009, the Opening Ceremony of a new Branch Office of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP) was launched at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park by Mr. Nguyen Van Lang, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Head of the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park Management Board.
PROTECTION OF “ĐẠI HOÀNG” GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION (GI) FOR NGỰ BANANA
On the 30th of September 2009, the NOIP issued Decision No. 1895/QD-SHTT on granting GI Certificate No. 17 for the famous Đại Hoàng Ngự banana. People’s Committee of Ly Nhan district is the administration authority of “Đại Hoàng” GI for the Ngự banana product.
